Andrew Marvell

Andrew Marvell (1621 - 1678) grew up near the town of Kingston Upon Hull. He later served the city as an MP. Marvell was writing around the time of the English Civil War, and this is reflected in his poems, many of which refer to Oliver Cromwell. Marvell’s best known poem, perhaps To his coy mistress which describes his desire to bed a lady. It has however been suggested that Marvell himself was a homosexual.
