Pablo Neruda

Pablo Neruda (1904 - 1973) was the pen name taken by chilean communist and writer politician Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto. Neruda’s poems have been translated in many different languages, and he is perhaps one of the most famous poets of the 20th century. Neruda wrote many different types of poems, from his famous collection ‘Ode to common things‘ through to sonnets and poems with obvious political messages. In 1973, Neruda passed away due to the onset of cancer. His death became a message against the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet in Chile. Chileans defied a curfew and mourned his passing in the streets.
