Subvert Cliché

A great way to come up with original ideas for poems is the subversion of cliché.

A problem many first time (and full time!) poetry writers face is that their poems revert back to cliché - roses are red etc etc.

If you’re looking for inspiration, and a great way to counter this, try changing well known sayings and clichés to make a poem out of them.

Here is an example

Shooting Stars
Sat here, rifle in hand i watch
Picking them off one by one
Trouble is they’re fearless
Kill one, and another arrives
to take it’s place.
~~Daniel Brown

Try turning common sayings such ‘an axe to grind’ or ‘raining cats and dogs’ and see what poems you can come up with.
